Remember the time when I entered the web industry, I was hired as a web developer (and somehow my title was changed to web designer for a short period). What I was doing at that time are ASP.NET (mainly), JSP, HTML, CSS and some JavaScript…sometimes I mess around with PhotoShop as well.
After 2 years time my company separated the programming duties into 2 parts: front-end scripting and back-end programming. I joined the front-end scripting team at that time and what I’ve been doing since the restructure are mainly HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XSLT, Flash (ActionScript) and some content management system implementation. For back-end programmers, they are now responsible for doing server-side code (like ASP.NET, JSP, PHP..etc) and configuring various systems.
I just wonder in Hong Kong or in other countries, are most of the companies separating the programming tasks like this? Does “front-end developer” actually have a definition that employers know what they are looking for?
